Types of Cat and Dog Allergens

Just like people, pets can develop allergies if their immune systems are too sensitive to something in their environment. In turn, their bodies react to that allergen in an abnormal way. These allergens can be grouped into several categories.

Environmental allergens

The most common environmental allergens are pollen, grass, dust mites, mold, and fibers from plants or animals. But there could be many other things found in your home or yard that your pet might be allergic to!

Food allergens

The most common food allergens in cats are beef, fish and chicken. Similarly, the most common food allergens in dogs are beef, dairy products, chicken, and wheat.

Contact allergens

Your pet might be allergic to materials like wool or synthetics, which are commonly used in carpets or bedding. Pyrethrins, often used in flea collars and pesticides, are also a common source of allergies.

Other allergens

Your pet might have an allergic reaction to a bee, wasp sting or spider bite. Though rare, pets can also have an allergic reaction to a vaccination.

Common Dog and Cat Allergy Symptoms

Allergies in pets can show up in different parts of their body. Here are some signs to watch out for:

Skin

Is your pet scratching, itching, or biting their skin, particularly their paws, skin, or belly area? Are you seeing inflamed, oozing red spots (hot spots) or areas of their coat where there seems to be a little (or a lot of) hair loss? How about dark spots, hives, or a rash? These can all be pet allergy symptoms.

Ears

If your pet’s ears smell like yeast, they get frequent ear infections, or they’re often scratching and shaking their head, it could be due to allergies. Redness, swelling, or discharge from the ears are also symptoms.

Eyes

Crusty or watery eyes, squinting, and eye discharge are all signs that your pet might be allergic to something in their environment.

Digestive System

Vomiting, diarrhea, gas, or a loss of appetite can be signs of food allergies. If your pet is showing these symptoms, bring them in for a visit at Dutch Fork Animal Hospital.

Respiratory System

Sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, coughing, or noisy breathing could point to allergies in your dog or cat.

Seasonal Allergies in Dogs and Cats
